Driving and Hiking Mt. Tamalpais

Woke up early to do some driving and nature pictures up in Marin.  I've done this drive once before and it's really great because it contains a mix of both road styles and natural habitats.  It takes you through giant redwoods, rock outcroppings, panoramic views, and lowland marsh and the ocean and cliffs off Highway 1.

For me coming from the East Bay it's a little bit of a drive but I eventually get over the Richmond-San Rafael bridge and into Marin.

If you are curious that's Mt. Tam and the Muir Woods area where we are headed off in the distance, and San Quentin prison on the left.

The real journey starts at Highway 1 near Muir Woods and Panoramic Highway, and take you through twists and turns with giant redwoods and rock outcroppings.

The benefit of being behind slow drivers....more pictures...
Cool tree!

A quick stop nearing the top of Mt. Tamalpais State Park
At the top there's a parking area that is supposed to be self pay.  It says to use an envelope and drop in money but I've yet to see envelopes or the money container working.  Maybe because it was Sunday.

Right off this Humming bird flew too me and hovered checking me out for a little bit, then landed on a tree.

There's an easy paved trail that loops around and is less than 3/4 of a mile.  I hadn't done it before but it sounded good and the views from this area are amazing, so I decided to try it out.

I found (and scared off) a small rabbit along the way...cute!

Just a little ways in there's a nice outcropping with a viewing area.  Gives great views of the Bay and Downtown.

Let's continue on the trail...

Turkey vultures and Humming Birds among others were flying around

View of Mt. Diablo in the distance and the Richmond San-Rafael bridge

Looking back...
Reservoir

Found a Chipmunk hanging out by the end of the trail
My what sharp claws you have...
I'm so glad I read this sign... AFTER I did the trail.  haha.

Leaving the top the drive opens up into some long rolling hills and turns with views below of the ocean and beach.

Probably the most notable would be a view of Stinson Beach

After that, the drive continues and eventually heads back into a wooded area on a narrow 1.5 lane road or so.

The benefit is I had found this nice little spot with some great lighting thanks to a soft canopy of trees.  Makes for some really nice car pictures..

Turning on the lights!

Eventually you make your way down to sea level and get onto Highway 1 just south of Point Reyes.  This area is a cool little marsh preserve with lots of birds.  Saw a ton of crane in the water and flying around.

After this the road starts to go up and you're having fun taking twists and turns along ocean views and cliffs very similar to down by Monterey.  Here's an example from a stop I made.

Caught this cool little Alfa Romeo Giulia convertible going by... well part of it.  Saw lots of other Porsche cars on the drive from newer and older 911's, another new 981 and also a Ferrari 458.

Ok that's it until next time!
